Summer beauty saviours

Now with the summer holidays here, it’s time to prep and make sure you have the must-have sunshine products, and know the tips and tricks to have you looking like a bronzed summer goddess from day one of your holiday, even if you haven’t seen the sun in over a year!

Summer problem no 1: foundation not sitting on your skin properly.

Holidaying somewhere hot, makeup tends to slip off the face within the first half of the day, so, if you need to keep your skin looking fresh, then some adjustments must be made.
One option is opting for a lighter moisturiser which will allow makeup to stand up better in heat. However, sun cream is usually much thicker than even the heaviest of moisturisers, and if you don’t want to damage and age your delicate skin, then you’ll need to look elsewhere.

Being fair and prone to unruly sunburn ourselves, we usually opt for Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream Sun Defense for Face SPF50 and we cannot sing its praises highly enough. The oil-free formula means that makeup won’t slide off, and the moisturising benefits are on a par with the legendary power of her original Eight Hour Cream. Available for £22.10 in 50ml at feelunique.com.

TIP: applying foundation in criss-cross strokes means that it will not only blend better, but will also create a cleaner finish and prevent any streaking when you sweat.

Problem no 2: shiny T-zone.

There’s nothing worse than a super-shiny face, and the typical combination of sweat and sun cream underneath your foundation can make this a likely occurrence. If you want to look dewy but not oily, you need to control your T-zone and with this, it’s all about mattifying. Provided that you have used an oil free base, use a mattifying primer. Here at The Pro Hygiene Collection, we will always love Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer, and Boots are doing a travel- sized version for just £12.50, which is perfect if your skin isn’t oily enough for a mattifying primer all year around.

After your makeup look is complete, lightly dust some translucent powder across your T-zone, paying attention to the area around the nose and nostrils. Bare Minerals’ Original Mineral Veil is entirely translucent and is perfect for the summer as it protects skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays, whilst absorbing oils, softening your complexion and minimising lines! Available in 9g for £21 at Feelunique.com.

General rule – when shopping for holiday makeup, make sure to switch as many of your makeup products to waterproof or oil-free as you can.

bourjois summer
Now for the all important bronze, our reliable friends at Beauty Bible have recommended Bourjois’ summer collection with four fab finds to have you glowing even before you’re off the plane.

Just remember that even if the sun is not shining brightly, the sun is strong in high summer, so our essential tip is that wherever you are heading for on your hols, protect your skin with high UVA/UVB sun protection, because looking like a Sun Goddess, even with the best prep and products on the market will not be achievable when you have overdone it in the sun!  And, remember, that sun damage will linger long after the sun tan has gone.
