Holiday Preparation – Shopping List & Packing Tips

Girl packing luggage

School is out for some of our lovely Scottish friends and for others, holidays start right now, which means it’s time to start preparing, so – to save you some time – here’s a check-list of all those essentials you’ll need to add to the shopping list!

Essentials – DO THESE FIRST
Travel insurance documents
Visa (if necessary)
Flight/accommodation tickets/booking confirmations etc.
Bank cards and foreign money

Clothing (now this does depend on where you are heading, but assuming it is somewhere with a bit of sunshine)

  • Sweatshirt/cardigan/light jacket for cool evenings (can be worn to travel in)
  • Scarf/overshirt – can be used for warmth in the evenings or as a cover-up after the beach
  • Trousers x 1 (can be worn to travel in)
  • Closed-toe shoes (can be worn to travel in)
  • Sun hat (can be worn to travel in, to avoid damage)
  • Shorts x 2
  • Day tops x 4
  • Lightweight evening outfits x 5 – non-crease dresses or shirts
  • Swimwear x 2
  • Underwear x how ever many days you are there
  • Flip Flops
  • Sandal heels
  • Nightwear x 1

Toiletries and medication

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Hair essentials – hair brush, curlers/straighteners, products etc.
  • Makeup bag (remember 100ml is the max size you can take on board a plane)
  • Toiletries bag (don’t forget the sun cream – don’t forget sizes for hand luggage)
  • Paracetamol/headache and pain killers
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Insect repellent

Everything Else

  • Mobile phone/charger/headphones
  • Camera/charger
  • Travel adaptor
  • Sunglasses
  • Pen/paper
  • Reading material
  • Day bag/handbag
  • Hand washing gel

How to Pack Effectively

Place shoes and all other heavy items at the bottom of your bag near the wheels, and fill the gaps with all your undies and bikinis.rollingdelete

Roll every item that can be rolled to avoid creasing, and for items that can’t be rolled (e.g. tailored shirts) turn them inside-out and tuck in the sleeves to maintain their shape for arrival.

And, one last tip, once you have put everything out on your bed to pack, half all your clothes and shoes as it is proven that you will only end up wearing half of what you pack, so don’t waste your hold luggage allowance, or pack a bigger bag than necessary – it all weighs and takes up much valuable space.

Happy holidays!
