High temperatures are a hazard for your hair, so when on holiday or just enjoying the summer sunshine – there are some simple steps towards giving your hair the TLC it needs to protect and recover.
It’s not just the scorching sun that wreaks havoc on those locks, but the chlorine in the pool too. To keep your hair shiny and radiant, follow these helpful tips to protect it; whether you’re blonde, red or brunette.
Did you know there is such a thing as hair sun-cream? These can come in sprays, or there are leave-in conditioners. Using sun protection on your hair isn’t that different from applying heat-protection before using straightening and curling irons. In the same way, it will not only prevent brittle and dry ends but will also have the added benefit of adding moisture and shine.
Clarins Sun Care Radiant Oil Spray High Protection UVB/UVA 30 a dry sun spray oil for the body and hair with high UVA/UVB 30 protection created with Clarins Laboratories’ sunscreen expertise, £20/150ml, clarins.co.uk.
Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil a lightweight, water-resistant UV defense mist that forms an invisible screen to help protect hair from sun exposure for up to 16 hours, to minimize colour fadage, damage and dryness, £21.50/100ml, aveda.co.uk.
According to Stylecaster, you should get into the sea or swimming pool with hair that is already wet as this apparently saturates the cuticles with water so that less chemicals can enter and damage the insides of your hairs!
Damage done? Don’t worry. Just ensure lots and lots of moisture by using Kiehl’s Damage Repairing & Rehydrating Leave-In Treatment to enrich, repair and strengthen those split ends and improve manageability, all in one go. If you’ve got fine hair, you don’t need much but you should apply a bit more if you have thick or curly hair, £19/75ml, Feelunique.com.
If the chlorine has already made your hair look yellow and straw-like, then opt for a silver shampoo toning shampoo to counteract brassiness. We highly recommend L’Oréal Professionnel Série Expert Silver Shampoo for Grey or White Hair. BUT don’t use this in place of your regular shampoo. We advise you use it every other wash until the brassy yellow tones have gone. If you leave it on for too long you might end up with purple streaks so really be careful and treat it like a wash-in wash-out shampoo rather than a leave-in toner, £9.35/240ml, feelunique.com.
